Outside Kyiv

Why always stay in the city center? Kyiv has several interesting places nearby.

Chernobil

Everyone still knows Chernobyl, the nuclear central that melted down in the eighties. These days, adventurous people people, either disaster tourists, or people who want to see a still life in real, go there for the experience. Several agencies organise trips. Note that you are not allowed in, without speacial 'visa'.

Mezhyhiria

Former president Yanukovich built his own Versailles. Not quite with good taste, but still expensive enough. One can get to Mezhihyria, taking a taxi or marshrutka from metro Heroiv Dnipra. A walk here is at the same time relaxing, and shows the weird ideas of someone who wants to show off.

Pereyaslav-Chmelnitsky

Taras Shevchenko lived here, Shalom Aleichem lived here, Skovoroda and several main hetmans  did. Ad to it that one of the most important battles in Ukrainian history took place here, and the sheer number of museums going from the Battle diorama to beekeeping to space exploration... reasons enough to jump onto a marshrutka for day out.
