Ukrainians are very hospitable and friendly people. If you make mistakes against their cultural habits and superstitions, it will not be a problem. However, some things are good to know.

 

- Take off your shoes. Most people will have 'tapki' slippers at the door for guests. So when you go into an apartement, take of your shoes.

 

- Ukrainian smile: Although it starts changing, you don't see Ukrainians smile on the street. If you spot a smile and you don't see an obvious reason for it, then call the loonie ambulance. (093 101 00 00)

 

- Shaking hands: When people meet, men will shake hands. Women do normally not shake hands with men if they haven't met before.

 

- Never shake hands or pass something through a doorway. It will bring bad luck to the people lving there. 

 

- Never leave an empty bottle on the table. Put it under the table and go get a new one. Oh, and if you open a bottle, drink it up.

 

- Try to sit between two people with the same name. It brings you luck. And if your name is Sasha, you're lucky, because you'll find it easy to sit between other Sashas.

 

- When in a inibus, it is totally normal that people pass on money to the front and back.  Don't worry if you need change. It'll come to you.
