Traditional food
If you ask the average person in say... Luxemburg, they will not have any clue about Ukrainian food.Still, there's lots of things to try. And if you don't like it, you better only try once.
Borsh
Without a doubt the number one Ukrainian dish. Calling this soup would make many locals frown. It's borsh, and you don't drink it from a cup. Every babushka (gramma) has her own recipe, but beetroot, meat and potatoes are definitely in it. Don't forget to ad a spoonful of smetana.
Vareniki
The local style of dumplings can come savory or sweet. You can find them in any supermarket. And of course, you ad smetana
Salo
Porc fat. You haven't been to Ukraine if you haven't tried salo. Order some to go with your beer in any pub.
Smetana
Sour cream. Whatever you eat in Ukraine, ad at least a spoonful of this to integrate in society.
Chicken Kyiv (kotleta po-kyivsky)
Chicken breast filled with butter and herbs. As the name says: it's a local dish!
Holubtsi
Cabbage leaves filled with rice and other stuff.
Kasha
Bukweat food. The Chinese eat rice, Europeans eat bread or potatoes, Eskimos eat... snow, I guess, and the Ukrainians eat kasha.
Drinks
The most popular drink in bars is beer, without a doubt. At home, tea is the thing. And luckily, Ukrainians do not ad smetana to neither.
Vodka
Of course, you know vodka. What you may not know, is that most Ukrainians do not drink more than a bottle per day.
Kvas
A sweat and sour drink based on bread. Foreigners often have to get used to it.
Uzvar
A drink made with dried fruit. Beware, it can contain vitamines.
Medovucha
Fermented honey drink.
